Roland E. “Wally” Walwer, 88, of Washington passed away Thursday, November 2, 2017, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

He was born on September 1, 1929 in Crescent City, IL, son of Jake and Laura Krumwiede Walwer.  He married Phyllis A. Tisdale on July 30, 1950 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Michael (Linda) Walwer of Springfield and Melinda (Kris Montgomery) Walwer of Shelton, CT. Further surviving are three grandchildren, Patrick (Jenn Whitmer) Walwer, Lisa (Diondre) Williams and Bradley (Milena Pisani) Walwer, along with one great-grandson, Landon Williams.  One infant son Randall, one daughter Susan, and his brother John preceded him in death.

Roland was an honorably discharged U.S. Army Veteran. Wally worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. for 43 years, beginning as an apprentice and last working as Superintendent of Heat Treat before retiring in 1991. He served for 20 years on the Central Grade School Board of Education and was part of the expansion from one-room schoolhouse to its current site.

He loved to build and fly remote-control airplanes and was a member of the Chillicothe-based RC flyers and then the Washington R/C Flyers. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Washington, the Central Illinois Agency on Aging and Washington’s Historical Preservation Commission.

His memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2017, at Mason-White Funeral Home in Washington.  Pastor Dick Hanson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until his time of service. Cremation rites have been accorded and a private inurnment will be held at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
