The Morton Varsity Girls Tennis team opened their season hosting the Potter Invitational on Saturday, August 24. The tournament was comprised of #1 and #2 singles divisions and #1, #2 and #3 doubles divisions with players from Geneseo, LaSalle-Peru, Metamora, Morris, Morton, Normal West, Pontiac and Richwoods.
Hitting #1 Singles for the Potters, senior Lissi Laktas, battled tough competition for a third place finish while senior Jacqueline Pfeifer secured a second place finish in the #2 singles draw.
Metamora doubles had a strong showing and swept the doubles draws, taking home championships in all three draws. Junior Nadia Frieden teamed up with senior Carly Tucker at #1 doubles, seniors Grace Couri and Abbi Nolte won #2 doubles, and junior Emma Nguyen and sophomore Hattie Timerman won at #3 doubles.
Morton’s #1 doubles team, sophomores Ilyse Knepp and Lucy Gardner, debuted in their first varsity match with a three-set match against a tough Normal West team who took second place in the tournament. Also with a good showing for the Potters were juniors Victoria Leman and Ana Mueller at #2 doubles, and junior Aryanna Pulcher and sophomore Addie Clementz at #3 doubles.
The young Potter team shows a lot of promise as they swing into the tennis season in the absence of last season’s leader, junior Maggie Sullivan, who is battling an injury.
