November GEMS session

Char Gott, a member and past president of the Peoria Magicians Assembly, worked with girls during the November GEMS session held at the Morton Public Library. The Morton Branch of the AAUW partnered with Morton Public Library to offer the November session.

The Morton Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) partnered with Morton Public Library to offer the November session of GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science).  Girls, grades 4-7, learned about magic from Char Gott, member and past President of the Peoria Magicians Assembly. The girls observed and then practiced Tricky Fingers, Jumping Rubber Band, Loop the Loop and the Zany Zookeeper card trick. In order to be great magicians, Ms. Gott taught them to practice, not tell the “magic” secrets, how magicians think and that the magic number is 793.8.

The next GEMS session will be held on December 17 at the Morton Public Library from 4-5:30 p.m. Emily Schoenfelder, AAUW volunteer, will present “Lights on, Lights out!”, a 4-H Development Program to explore energy transfer and conductivity. GEMS participants will have the opportunity to make their own electrical circuits and design a light-up greeting card.   All girls, grades 4-7, are welcome, but must pre-register through the Morton Public Library at http://www.mortonlibrary.org.
