Morton cross country teams race in Shazam Championships

With the cancellation of the IHSA State Cross Country Meet, Shazam Racing and Milesplit IL announced their joint venture to host the Shazam Championships. This provided qualifying elite athletes from across the state an opportunity to compete in post season championship races amongst the best of the best. High school Division I - III athletes participated over the November 6-8 weekend.

IHSA guidelines prohibited teams from competing in their own uniforms and by their team name, so your well-known Morton Potters became MOTRON. The team chose the name from a tale Assistant Coach Joe Zeller tells of a group of his friends and teammates “painting up” in support years ago at a state meet.  The enthusiastic, shirtless supporters each had a letter painted on them to spell out Morton.  Problem being, they lined up in the wrong order, spelling “MOTRON” rather than the Potters’ home town.

On Saturday, November 7, team MOTRON took the course against the state’s Division II elites.  The Potter men were rated third or fourth after sectionals, depending on who you follow in polls, and earned the title of State Champions (a first in school history), with All-State performances from Freshmen, Josh Weeks (sixth) and Yonas Wutherich (15th).

Powered by an 11th place All-State performance from junior Emma Skinner, the MOTRON ladies placed seventh in state.  Skinner earned All-State honors for the third straight year and led her team to two historical post season victories (Regionals and Sectionals).

Team MOTRON was led by coach Brian Gordon.  Your Morton Potters XC team end their phenomenal season led by the coaching staff of Joel Zehr, Dave Getz and Joe Zeller.
