The Pekin Dragons hosted the Washington Panthers for a Mid-Illini Conference varsity football game on Friday, October 1, with both teams entering the matchup at 2-1.  Neither team could get on the board until Pekin scored late in the second quarter and went to the half with a 6-0.  Pekin scored again in the third quarter to extend their lead to 14-0.  The Panthers’ Drew Lewis received the ensuing kick-off and ran it back for Washington’s first score, cutting the lead to 14-7.  Washington tied the game up in the fourth quarter with just over 7 minutes left in the game. Pekin answered with a long drive and scoring a touchdown with just 1:44 left in the game to go up 21-14.  The Panthers started at their own 45 on their ensuing possession and marching down the field to score on a Noah Berlett to Isaac Mapson pass with 8.2 seconds left in the game. Down 21-20, Washington elected to go for the two-point conversion to win the game rather than tie with an extra point kick. Berlett hit Thomas Borges as he crossed, taking the pass into the end zone and giving the Panthers a thrilling 22-21 victory. Following the Friday, October 1 varsity football games, Metamora, Morton and Washington are all currently tied for first place in the Mid-Illini Conference with 3-1 records. Thomas Borges beats a Pekin defender to the end zone for the two-point conversion, giving the Panthers the win with 8.2 seconds left in the game.
