On Thursday, November 21, the community is invited to attend the 25th Annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, a tradition begun in 1995 by Mayor Don Gronewold and Bob Summers - a tradition that is continued to this day by the Washington Chamber of Commerce along with Mayor Gary Manier. The early morning gathering of Washington area residents and friends will be held at Countryside Banquet Facility, 659 School Street, with doors opening at 6:15 a.m. and breakfast buffet beginning at 6:30 a.m. The annual breakfast continues to be an event where the community can come together to celebrate God’s grace and, in turn, to support the leadership of the community.

This year’s featured speaker will be Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Stewart.  Dr. Stewart is an assistant member of the Department of Oncology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  Dr. Stewart originally went to St. Jude as a clinical fellow in 2010, and she completed her Hematology-Oncology Fellowship training in 2014 while working in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Dyer.  As a fellow, she devoted her time to investigating high-risk pediatric solid tumors.  Dr. Stewart discovered new drug combinations in the laboratory that worked well against Ewing sarcoma, a type of pediatric bone cancer.  Because of this success, these new combinations of drugs are now being used in several clinical trials for patients with high-risk Ewing sarcoma.

All are welcome to attend and  hear Dr. Stewart talk about the amazing research she is doing in her own laboratory, specifically focusing on childhood solid tumors such as Ewing sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and osteosarcoma.  Her primary focus is to look for new therapy options for these tumors.  She has had her work published in several high-profile peer-reviewed journals and contributed to several clinical trials.  In addition to her work in the lab, she continues to treat patients in the solid tumor clinic at St. Jude.

Sponsors for this year’s event include platinum sponsors: Busey Bank, Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory, Heartland Bank and Trust Company, Uftring Chevy of Washington, Washington Community Bank and the Washington Ministerial Association.

The general public is invited to attend this yearly, inspirational morning of prayer and encouragement. Individual reservations are $27 each, and tables of eight are $216. Reservations are required. The buffet breakfast will be catered by Countryside Banquet Facility.
